/Current Uni Project/ - Visual Merchandising

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

So here we are, the 2nd brief of 2014! This one is focusing on visual merchandising and in more detail, window displays! I'm actually really excited about this assignment and I can't wait to get started!

So, the brief:

'Shop windows bring glamour, fun, theatre and arts to the streets, a visible 24-hour expression of the store's image, brand and inspiration.' - Mary Portas

(Harvey Nichols, Christmas 2012, Knightsbridge London. Source: thewindowdisplayblog.com)

  • The promotion and marketing firm you work for has asked you, the visual display designer, to come up with a design for a new window display for one of the brands and retailers they represent:
Ted Baker
Urban Outfitters
All Saints
Harvey Nichols

  • The new design should entice their existing as well as new customers into the store. The window display will be for spring summer 2014 so you should focus on current trends and/or events.
  • The display could focus on a certain theme, day, event or trend happening between March-September 2014.
  • The way in which you display your final design is up to you. You may present it in a 2D format straight from photoshop or in a 3D format - creating a model/prototype.
23 days till deadline!

So guys, this is my new brief and I must say it is really interesting! Working in retail has opened by eyes to the world of visual merchandising and I'm really looking forward to researching it more. It is crazy how much of an affect the layout of a store can have on us as customers and alter how much time we spend in the store to the certain route we take when looking around!

My inital idea is taking the store Urban Outfitters and creating a window display based around World Music Day (June 21st)
I'll keep you guys posted on my journey and hopefully you'll find it interesting!

Hope you're all well,

  1. I had a similar brief last year on my course, and found the website WGSN soo much help with building a concept for a window display. When I first browsed the website, I had no idea what my theme was going to be but once I'd left, I'd created an entire mind map worth of possibilities. You should definitely check it out if you're ever struggling for inspiration.
